Allen Miles: Back to Court

September 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Last Friday Allen Miles was to appear before Judge Norman, to be sentenced to Drug Court. I spent time with Allen, a few days before, talking about the possibilities for a better future. His excitement was palpable. After waiting for nearly three hours in the court room, my heart sank as the two inmates came before the judge and Allen was not among them.

It turned out that Allen had a previous probation violation that needed to be resolved before anything else could move forward. I was informed two days ago that these charges have been resolved and Allen will appear before Judge Norman within the next several hours.

I find myself excited for Allen – excited at the possibilities for his future. When we talked, last week, one of the things that I asked Allen was: what does he see for his future. One of the things was having a wife and starting a family. When I asked him how that felt – when he thought about it, he replied: I don’t know. I have never experienced that kind of love – I don’t have any idea how it will feel, but I know that I want it.

Now, one week later – to the hour, I am sitting back in the waiting room of Judge Norman’s courtroom, waiting for Allen to come before him. I have already checked in with the court officer and Allen is definitely on the docket for today. It is just a matter of waiting for him to be called. If all goes well Allen will be transferred to the DC4 facilities on Monday, where I will be waiting as he gets out of the van.

Until next time…..
